This has been quite the week for myself. Between 12 hour work days and family I managed to squeeze in first impressions for 5 shows this season. Even with that I took Saturday and Sunday to finish an Anime that I should have a long time ago.
So I’m keeping true to my word and finally took the time to sit down and knock out Madoka Magica. It does not get the credit it deserves from a large portion of the male audience. The character development was pretty spot on. As well as the pacing. If you’re interested in watching the show the Crunchyroll link is below.
So let’s dig into this show. Madoka Magica is a show about magical girls but with a very interesting twist. The battles between the girls, witches, and familiars are extremely dark and at times sadistic. By the end you get a feeling of Higurashi No Naku Kuro Ni Rei (When They Cry) mixed with Sailor Moon. A magical girl horror was NOT what I was expecting. So much managed to take place in those 12 short episodes.
The characters each are memorable. Mami, Madoka, Saiyaka, Homura, and Kyoko. Every moment was just intriguing. At times I was upset because Madoka was taking forever to become a magical girl. That all changed after the Homura timeline history that explained WHY everything is the way it is now. That explanation was absolutely perfect for the story line. We also have the huge plot twist where we find out that magical girls become witches so essentially they’re eliminating each other after their soul gem becomes corrupted.
This is very sad but an interesting turn because that realization helps Madoka make the proper wish to change things for the better. She also becomes somewhat of a “god” which in itself is very very cool. I kind of wish we could have seen more of her as a magical girl but in the end I was very happy with the show and it’s certainly one that will be in my favorites for a long time. I’m really excited to get to watch the movies to see what else they reveal.
