Mid-Season Review: “Haikyu!!”

Hey Tokurs! I’m working on catching up on my shows that I want to watch this season. Decided that Haikyu!! would be my first show to give a partial review.

Simulcast on Fridays 2:30pm EST

Publisher: Toho

Crunchyroll Description:

“Based off of the original Weekly Shonen Jump manga series from Haruichi Furudate, Haikyu!! is a slice-of-life sports anime revolving around Shoyo Hinata’s love of volleyball. Inspired by a small-statured pro volleyball player, Hinata creates a volleyball team in his last year of middle school. Unfortunately the team is matched up against the “King of the Court” Tobio Kageyama’s team in their first tournament and inevitably lose. After the crushing defeat, Hinata vows to surpass Kageyama After entering high school, Hinata joins the volleyball team only to find that Tobio has also joined. “

Watch Show

The power of “Guess Blocking!”

As many of you know Haikyu!! is one of my favorite shows. This season is about the finals between Shiratorizawa and Karasuno. The matches have been nothing but intense. Just watching and seeing how the directors incorporated the crowds gathered for both teams interactions helps really build the mood for the matches. Karasuno is barely holding on but it’s that suspense that makes it exciting.

The teams are evenly matched.

Shiratorizawa is a true powerhouse school. Ushijima is easily the most dominant character so far shown in the show. Granted there are many power players in the show this character is by far one of the few that stands well above the rest of the cast in direct power. I would love to see Azumane develop into an Ushijima style character for the team to give them a powerhouse ace they can rely on for points at any time.

Logic doesn’t exist for Kageyama and Hinata’s teamwork!

There’s also the development of Tsukishima into a defensive monster. They were hinting at it during the summer camp last season when they had the opportunity to train Nekoma High and the other high schools. So this development only seems natural for him and is very exciting for me. I think he’ll develop a better style of blocking than “Guess Blocking” or “Read Blocking.” It will most likely be something intellect based, where he eliminates the opponents options, as we’ve seen him doing to Ushijima forcing him to hit to Nishinoya.

The block worth 1000 points!

Though at this point in the show it seems like Kageyama is getting really tired. I’m hoping that they bring in Sugawara, at some point, and let him carry the team to victory or have a vital role in why they win. This would make for a great finish for the season and the tournament.

Reactions to Tsukishima’s score.

Hinata has been putting in tremendous work as the decoy and with his essential quicks with Kageyama. His development of the “Approaching Block” seems like it’s going to serve a vital role in the upcoming final match. Hinata has really evolved as a character and it’s exciting seeing what he continues to develop into.

Middle blocker face-off: Tsukishima and Tendo

The show is really doing well with the matches and the intensity. I’m always on the edge of my seat in excitement. The minor jokes included also make me laugh. Seeing the emotions of the players portrayed so well and the desperation to win engages me to my core as an athlete. The rest of the season is looking to be very exciting with hope that they do win so that we can see them battle Nekoma at the National Tournament. Haikyu is still carrying a strong A-Rank from me.

Ushijima “The Unstoppable”
