“From the creator and team behind Hellsing comes a thrilling story where history and fantasy collide. Shimazu Toyohisa, a famous samurai who fought in the historical Battle of Sekigahara, is transported to another world when only moments from death. From that moment on, he becomes part of a group known as “Drifters” and is forced to battle against other legendary warriors in an ultimate death game.”
I watched Hellsing a very long time ago it’s such a great show. So if the creator of Hellsing made this then hopefully it’s up to par with the quality of that story. Of course I’m going to have slightly higher expectations but I won’t hold it against the show.
Episode 1: “Fight Song”
Let’s get into it!
This show starts out with a huge action packed battle. We see Toyohisa taking out tons of enemy soldiers one after the other. It’s almost straight out of Dynasty Warriors. I’m no historian buff so I’m not sure if Toyohisa is a historic figure in Japanese culture but he certainly is fighting like one. The Shimazu clan is retreating and Toyohisa stays back with a group armed with guns and holds off as many as he can while the rest retreat.
He manages to shoot the leader Naomasa of the li Clan. While taking what seems to be fatal damage as he attempts to return to Satsuma it seems like he faints or is transported to another realm. He meets up with a mysterious man who writes his name on a piece of paper that causes Toyohisa to be pulled into another portal in a new world.
Toyohisa is saved by some elves who call him a “Drifter.” They take him to a castle with a man who is also a drifter. A male drifter tells him to stitch up his wounds and hopefully he survives on his own strength. Toyohisa awakens with the mystery male drifter who tells him that he is Nobunaga. Toyohisa doesn’t believe him since Nobunaga has been dead in his world for nearly 18 years. Nobunaga claims it’s only been 6 months. Then he tells the woman to introduce himself, his name is Nasu Suketaka Yoichi. This sends Toyohisa for a spin as these are great people of history that people believe are dead.
As they’re discussing a bit of history and where they all are from and what happened to them they find out they all met the same mysterious man. At that time we see they are being spied on by another group of people. They seem to be planning some sort of attack as the show ends.
Drifters looks absolutely amazing the artwork stood out to me and looked beautiful. The music was decent it didn’t stand out too much to me. There was a bit of comedy so it seems like there will a bit of fun and laughs. They gave us just enough to get us to watch the next episode. I’m not sure where they show is going to go but we also got a glimpse of a soldier from another time period. I give the show a solid B-Rank. Not sure if I will continue it but the action looks like it will be interesting. We’ll see how it goes. Comment why I should or should not continue the show in the comments.
